Energy partition at the collapse of spherical cavitation bubbles.
Spherically collapsing cavitation bubbles produce a shock wave followed by a rebound bubble. Here we present a systematic investigation of the energy partition between the rebound and the shock. Highly spherical cavitation bubbles are produced in microgravity, which suppresses the buoyant pressure gradient that otherwise deteriorates the sphericity of the bubbles. We measure the radius of the r...
متن کاملCollapse of Kaluza-Klein bubbles.
Kaluza-Klein theory admits “bubble” configurations, in which the circumference of the fifth dimension shrinks to zero on some compact surface. A three parameter family of such bubble initial data at a moment of timesymmetry (some including a magnetic field) has been found by Brill and Horowitz, generalizing the (zero-energy) “Witten bubble” solution. Some of these data have negative total energ...
متن کاملThe Collapse of a Cloud of Bubbles
A numerical simulation of the collapse of a cloud of bubbles has been used t o demonstrate the development of an inwardly propagating shock wave which grows rapidly in magnitude. The fully non-linear nonbarotropic homogeneous flow equations are coupled with single bubble dynamics aud solved by a stable numerical scheme. The computational results demonstrate khe structure of the shock wave as we...
متن کاملThe effect of pressure gradient on the collapse of cavitation bubbles in normal and reduced gravity
When water flows through hydraulic turbomachines, the local pressure can become low enough to vaporize the water and create vapor cavities. This phenomenon is called cavitation. When the cavities collapse, shock waves and liquid jets traveling through the inclusions can erode nearby solid surfaces. The collapse of cavitation bubbles has been extensively investigated in the case of a single bubb...
متن کاملShock waves and noise in the collapse of a cloud of cavitation bubbles
Calculations of the collapse dynamics of a cloud of cavitation bubbles confirm the speculakions of M#rch and his co-workers and demonstrate that collapse occurs as a result of the inward propagation of a shock wave which grows rapidly in magnitude. Results are presented showing the evolving dynamics of the cloud and the resulting far-field acoustic noise.
